Where Smoke Detectors Are Required
NFPA 72, the national fire alarm code, sets three placements that are not optional. Alarms go inside every sleeping room, outside every separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home including the basement. Miss any one of those and you have left a gap that a fire will find before the alarm does.
A hallway alarm sitting in the immediate vicinity of several bedrooms satisfies the outside-the-bedrooms requirement and usually covers that level too, which is why the calculator above does not double count it. On levels with no bedrooms, put the alarm in the living room or near the stairway instead.
One detail worth knowing: the requirement for an alarm inside each bedroom only became standard for new construction in 1993. Plenty of older homes were built before that and still have a single hallway unit. If your house predates the mid nineties, assume it is short.
How High and How Far From the Wall
Smoke rises to the ceiling and then spreads outward, so ceiling mounting catches it first and is preferred in ordinary homes. Corners are the exception because air barely circulates there, which is why the codes set minimum clearances.

Why Interconnection Matters More Than the Count
Interconnected alarms all sound together the moment any one of them detects smoke. That matters because a fire starting in a basement can burn for several minutes before enough smoke reaches an upstairs bedroom to trigger the alarm in it, and those minutes are the ones you need.
New construction requires interconnection in most states. Older homes can get the same effect with wireless interconnected units, which talk to each other over radio and need no wiring at all. If you are replacing alarms anyway, this is the upgrade worth paying for.
Placement Mistakes That Cause Nuisance Alarms
A nuisance alarm is not just annoying. It is the reason people pull batteries out, and a disabled alarm is the single most common failure found after a fatal house fire. Almost every nuisance alarm traces back to placement rather than a faulty unit.
Keep units well clear of the stove, away from bathroom doors where steam escapes, and out of the direct path of heating and cooling vents. If a bedroom has an attached bathroom, put the alarm on the far side of the room from that door. In an open plan kitchen, a heat detector inside the kitchen with a smoke alarm just outside it solves the problem that trips most people up.

Sensors degrade whether the unit has been used or not, which is why the ten year rule applies even to an alarm that has never gone off. The date is stamped on the back of the housing, not on the front, so you have to take it down to read it.
